Play chess online with your friends or play the computer. In this area, you can play online chess easily and free of charge as a guest. Set up a new game with your own mode and challenge other players to a game, or accept a match offer from the available list. Chess is a classic strategy board game where the objective is to checkmate your opponent's king, which means it is under attack and has no legal move. Each player starts the game with a set of 16 pieces, 8 pawns, 2 rooks, 2 knights, 2 bishops, a queen, and a king.

Welcome to Chess Tempo's Play Chess Online feature. You can play online chess against other site members, or against bots with a range playing strengths.

For unrestricted playing, you need to be logged into your Chess Tempo account. Please Register for an account if you do not have one already. Registration and playing are both free.

You can also play as a guest by clicking on the 'Play as Guest' button below. Guests are restricted to unrated, non-correspondence play, and cannot play computer opponents or chat while playing.

Both traditional and correspondence chess is supported, allowing you to play a quick chess game, or a correspondence game spanning many days or weeks.

After server restart, all current bullet and blitz games will be aborted. Longer games will be resumed.
